The history of The Giumarra Companies has deep roots. It starts with an immigrant's story of hard work and an unwavering commitment to quality fruits and vegetables. It continues today in a company of worldwide reach and world-class capabilities.
Born to a family of grape growers in Ragusa, Sicily, Giuseppe "Papa Joe" Giumarra came to the United States in the early 1900's with dreams of starting a vineyard. By 1920, he was selling fresh produce from his own stall on the old 7th Street Wholesale Fruit Market in Los Angeles. In 1922, he and his brothers John and George and brother-in-law Dominick Corsaro started Giumarra Brothers Fruit Company, Inc.
The brothers had real passion and talent for finding wholesome and delicious produce, and they soon developed a well-earned reputation for bringing exceptional quality grapes, stone fruit and citrus to the Los Angeles market from growers all over southern California. The Giumarra name quickly became a trusted endorsement of consistent high quality. This heritage of careful attention to quality is still the foundation of all we do today.
